AMMAN, JORDAN – In a statement released to the public, the Jordanian authorities announced the thwarting of three significant drug smuggling attempts across the Syrian border. The move comes just days after a series of airstrikes in the war-torn region.
According to an official source, the Jordanian Customs Department reported that on three separate occasions, attempts were made to smuggle large quantities of illicit substances into the country through various entry points. The source revealed that the shipments, estimated to be valued in the millions of dollars, consisted of a variety of drugs, including heroin, amphetamines, and hashish.
Details of the first incident were provided, stating that customs officials at the Naharayn border crossing intercepted a shipment of approximately 500 kilograms of contraband. The illicit substance was reportedly hidden within a shipment of food supplies, and authorities were successful in arresting the smugglers and seizing the goods.
In a separate incident, officials at the Al-Omari border crossing foiled an attempt to smuggle 300 kilograms of amphetamines, hidden within a shipment of building supplies. Authorities confirmed that two individuals were apprehended and are currently being questioned.
On a third occasion, officials at the Rouseifa border crossing detected a group attempting to smuggle hashish worth millions of dollars into the country. Authorities stated that a combined effort between the Customs Department, the Jordanian Police, and the Syrian authorities led to the successful thwarting of the attempt. The shipment consisted of 1,000 kilograms of hashish, reportedly hidden within a shipment of construction materials.
These recent discoveries have prompted Jordanian authorities to emphasize the importance of continued cooperation between regional countries and international partners to combat the issue of cross-border narcotics trafficking.
The announcement comes as regional tensions remain high following the recent airstrikes. In response to these developments, Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh vowed to maintain his government’s strict stance on narcotics trafficking, stating that, “The government will not hesitate to take stern measures against those involved in the smuggling of illicit substances.”
The Jordanian authorities have assured the public that increased measures are being taken to bolster border security and prevent similar attempts in the future, underscoring their commitment to regional security and stability.
