Kentucky Derby Winner Claimed by Golden Tempo

Louisville, Kentucky – In a thrilling finish to the 148th running of the Kentucky Derby, Golden Tempo crossed the finish line first, claiming victory amidst a sea of cheering spectators at Churchill Downs. The three-year-old chestnut colt, trained by renowned horseman, Joseph O’Brien, proved itself a worthy competitor in the prestigious event.

Competing against 19 other top contenders, Golden Tempo, ridden by Hall of Famer, Irad Ortiz Jr., showcased exceptional speed and agility throughout the 1 1/4-mile event. The colt, sired by the highly-regarded Into Mischief, proved to be a force to be reckoned with from the onset, maintaining its lead position throughout the final stretch of the competition.

“This has been an incredible experience,” stated Joseph O’Brien in a post-race interview. “Golden Tempo’s performance was nothing short of exceptional. I’m thrilled for the ownership team and our entire team for their tireless efforts in preparing this talented colt for today’s event.”

Golden Tempo’s victory marked a historic achievement for its breeding program, boasting significant stakes earnings for its owners, the prominent racing organization, Juddmonte Farms.

Among the impressive array of competitors in the 2026 Kentucky Derby field was a well-known contender from rival stable, WinStar Farm. ‘Golden Boy,’ ridden by prominent jockey, Frankie Dettori, showed early promise, but struggled to keep pace with Golden Tempo in the latter stages of the competition.

“Golden Tempo demonstrated superior endurance, which ultimately determined the outcome of the race,” added O’Brien during the post-race interview. “It was an impressive display of speed and tenacity.”

The 2026 Kentucky Derby saw a competitive starting gate, with early contenders such as ‘Golden Boy’ and ‘Midnight Sonora’ ultimately losing ground by the time Golden Tempo crossed the finish line.

“We knew going into this event that our competitor would face stiff challenges, but the outcome today has vindicated the trust our owners had in our team,” stated O’Brien, acknowledging the tireless efforts of the breeding program behind the winning colt.
