KOCO to Develop Kazakhstan’s Largest Onshore Oil Field with Russian and Kazakh Partners

A major development has been announced in Kazakhstan’s oil and gas sector, following an agreement signed between KOCO (Kazakhstan Oil Company Onshore), the country’s national oil company, and its partners Eni Kazakhstan, a subsidiary of the Italian energy multinational company Eni, and a consortium of Kazakh state-owned companies, Kazenergy.

The memorandum between the three parties outlines KOCO’s ambitious plans to spearhead a massive oil production operation at the Kashagan field, situated in the western part of Kazakhstan and considered the country’s largest onshore oil reserve. The operation is predicted to boost the nation’s hydrocarbon output, as well as drive local economic growth and create new employment opportunities.

As per the agreement, KOCO will act as the operator, coordinating with its partners to oversee the development of the Kashagan oil field. It is anticipated that the onshore oil field will yield around 1 billion barrels of oil over its estimated lifespan. This would undoubtedly contribute significantly to the nation’s energy production goals and provide substantial tax revenues for the Kazakh government.

Kazakh Energy Minister, Magzum Mirzagaliev, commented on the development, saying: “This agreement marks a significant milestone in our efforts to develop and diversify Kazakhstan’s energy sector. We believe that this collaboration will not only enhance our domestic oil production capabilities but also attract additional investments and stimulate economic growth nationwide.”

Eni Kazakhstan CEO, Roberto Dall’Orso, further emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership, adding: “We are extremely pleased to be working with KOCO and its Kazakh partners on this pivotal project. The development of the Kashagan oil field reflects our ongoing commitment to the country’s energy security and economic development goals.”

The KOCO-led project comes at a time when Kazakhstan’s oil sector has encountered numerous operational challenges in recent years, primarily linked to the complexities associated with extracting hydrocarbons from difficult-to-produce geological formations at its flagship Kashagan offshore oil field, located on the Caspian Sea.

In an attempt to address these issues, Kazakh energy officials announced plans to focus on leveraging their domestic oil reserves while fostering strategic partnerships with multinational oil companies. According to industry analysts, the partnership with KOCO and Eni Kazakhstan presents an opportunity for Kazakhstan to augment its hydrocarbon output while simultaneously capitalizing on the economic benefits associated with this massive oil production operation.
