Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has categorically denied reports of a high-stakes, secretive diplomatic meeting between Ukrainian and Russian officials, amid ongoing tensions in the Donbas region. The reports, which surfaced on social media and international news outlets, claimed that Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister, Dmytro Senik, had secretly met with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Ryabkov, in a neutral third country.
According to reports, the alleged meeting was held in a bid to discuss a potential ceasefire and peace agreement between Ukrainian government forces and Russian-backed separatists in the Donbas region. However, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has since distanced itself from the claims, stating that no such meeting took place.
“In light of recent reports suggesting a secretive meeting between Ukrainian and Russian officials, we would like to clarify that no such meeting occurred,” a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a statement. “While we continue to engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve the situation in the Donbas region, any formal negotiations would be conducted through established and recognized channels of communication.”
Russian officials have also maintained that no secret meeting took place, with Kremlin sources suggesting that allegations of such a meeting were “malicious rumors” spread by opposing forces. The reported meeting has sparked a wave of skepticism among Ukrainian officials, who have accused Russia of attempting to undermine Ukraine’s position through misinformation.
The denial of any secret meeting has raised questions about the true nature of diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in Donbas. Critics argue that Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry may be withholding information on ongoing negotiations, while also questioning the credibility of Russian and international sources that reported the meeting.
Diplomatic tensions between Ukraine and Russia remain high, following a recent escalation of hostilities in the Donbas region. Reports of civilian deaths and injuries have poured in, prompting international calls for a return to ceasefires and efforts to negotiate a lasting peace.
The Ukrainian government has accused Russia of supporting separatist forces and violating ceasefire agreements. Russia has, in turn, denied any involvement in the conflict, while accusing Ukraine of carrying out a “state-led war” against civilians.
