In the latest revelation regarding Russia’s ongoing military buildup, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, known as the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense (GUR), has disclosed that Moscow has stockpiled an extensive arsenal of Geran drones. According to official estimates, the Russian military has amassed more than 6,200 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) ahead of the upcoming winter season.
The GUR has highlighted that, during this critical period, Russian forces have been intensifying their drone strikes on Ukrainian positions. It is observed that in these targeted attacks, the enemy launches around 150-200 drones simultaneously, while large-scale, coordinated strikes could involve as many as 600-1,000 drones at once. This exponential jump in the number of drones has been described as a strategic ploy to weaken Ukrainian defenses prior to the onset of harsh winter conditions.
Further, in an effort to fortify its drone capabilities, Ukraine estimates that the Russian military is producing some 3,000 Geran-4/5 drones each month. Notably, the production of these advanced models is reported to be at an unprecedented rate, suggesting that Russia continues to make significant investments in drone technology.
The revelation underscores concerns among Ukrainian officials and experts that the impending winter may lead to increased aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. In light of this warning, Ukrainian authorities will need to redouble their efforts in developing countermeasures and strategies to counter Russia’s enhanced drone capabilities.
