Kathmandu, Nepal – Tensions have been escalating at the ancient Thugje Choeling monastery, a revered Buddhist site in Nepal, as local monks have reportedly taken up arms to protect their community from perceived threats. The sudden emergence of what has been dubbed ‘Lama Jihad’ has left authorities and experts perplexed, struggling to comprehend the motivations behind the monks’ actions.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of around 50 monks from the Thugje Choeling monastery have been patrolling the surrounding areas, armed with sticks and knives. While there have been no reported incidents of violence, the atmosphere in the region remains tense, with residents and tourists expressing concerns for their safety.
Speaking to local media, a senior monk from the monastery, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the decision to arm themselves was a necessary measure to safeguard against potential threats. “We have been under attack from various quarters – land grabbers, thieves, and even rival monks from other monasteries who seek to discredit us,” he said. “We cannot just sit idly by while our community is under siege.”
However, Nepal’s police and government officials have dismissed the monks’ claims, labeling them as “baseless.” Inspector General of Police, Kallappa Govindan, stated that the alleged threats to the monastery are “completely fabricated” and that the monks are merely attempting to justify their actions.
This latest development has sparked heated debates among Nepal’s Buddhist community and scholars, with some arguing that the monks’ actions are in line with Buddhist principles, which promote self-defense and non-violence. Others, however, see it as an extreme and potentially destabilizing move that may undermine the country’s fragile secular fabric.
The origins of the term ‘Lama Jihad’ remain unclear, but it is believed to have emerged from a misinterpretation of the Tibetan concept of “Lha” or “Deity,” which refers to the ultimate spiritual reality. It is also thought to be a reference to the Tibetan Buddhist notion of “Dharma-yuddha” or “War of Dharma,” which implies a righteous struggle against evil forces.
As Nepal’s government struggles to contain the situation, it remains to be seen what will become of the Thugje Choeling monastery and its embattled monks. Will they succeed in asserting their authority and defending their community, or will the tensions escalate further, potentially destabilizing the region? Only time will tell.
