LATVIA-CRISIS: UNIDENTIFIED DRONE STRIKES FUEL FACILITY, CAUSING CONCERN IN REGION

Rēzekne, Latvia – Authorities in Latvia have confirmed that an unidentified drone, believed to have entered from Russia, struck a fuel storage facility in the city of Rēzekne early yesterday morning. According to official reports, the unidentified drone targeted an empty fuel tank at the site, causing significant damage and sparking concerns about the potential for future attacks.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 AM local time, when the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was spotted hovering over the site before releasing a payload that struck the fuel tank. No injuries have been reported, and an investigation into the incident is currently underway.

“Initial assessments suggest that the impact was significant, but fortunately, no one was injured in the incident,” said a spokesperson for the Latvian Ministry of Defense. “We are working closely with the authorities to determine the origin and intentions of the drone.”

The incident has sparked concerns about the potential for further attacks on critical infrastructure in the region. Latvia has a long-standing relationship with neighboring countries, including Lithuania and Estonia, and has been a key member of NATO’s efforts to counter Russian aggression in the region.

This is not the first time that Latvian authorities have reported incidents involving unidentified drones. In recent months, the country has experienced a number of similar incidents, with officials warning that the threat from UAVs could be escalating.

“This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased vigilance and cooperation in the region,” said a representative from the Latvian Ministry of Interior. “We will continue to work closely with our international partners to address this threat and ensure the safety of our citizens.”

Russia has so far refused to comment on the incident, with officials in Moscow maintaining a policy of silence on the matter. The incident is likely to spark renewed tensions between Russia and the Western allies, who have long accused Moscow of using UAVs to gather intelligence and conduct reconnaissance in the region.

As the investigation into the incident continues, officials are urging residents to remain calm and vigilant. “We understand that this incident may have caused concern in the community, but we are working tirelessly to address this threat and ensure the safety of those living in and around Rēzekne,” said the spokesperson for the Latvian Ministry of Defense.
