Lebanon Condemns Israeli Attacks, Accusing Israel of Repeatedly Violating International Protections

In a strongly worded statement, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned recent Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon, citing repeated violations of the Framework Agreement, the Military Coordination Group mechanism, and international protections for civilians. Aoun’s remarks came in response to the ongoing tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, particularly in the Nabatieh district and surrounding areas.

According to reports, the Israeli military launched a series of attacks on Lebanon in recent days, resulting in the killing of an entire family in the town of Insar (Ansar). The victims, who were identified as a mother and her two children, died in the aerial strikes, prompting widespread condemnation from Lebanese officials. President Aoun described the incident as a “clear message” to the negotiation process, suggesting that Israel’s actions were aimed at undermining the U.S.-brokered Framework Agreement.

The Framework Agreement, which was reached in 2022, aimed to address long-standing issues between Israel and Lebanon, including the delimitation of maritime borders and the resolution of border disputes. However, the agreement has yet to be fully implemented, with both sides accusing each other of violating its terms. The Military Coordination Group mechanism, which facilitates communication between the Israeli and Lebanese militaries, has also been criticized for failing to prevent such incidents.

Lebanon has long accused Israel of violating Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, with critics pointing to the large number of Israeli airstrikes and ground incursions in recent years. Despite numerous condemnations from international bodies, including the United Nations, Israel has continued to assert its right to self-defense, citing concerns over Lebanon’s alleged support for militant groups.

The recent attacks have sparked widespread outrage in Lebanon, with protests and demonstrations taking place in major cities. Lebanon’s parliament has also summoned the defense minister to testify on the attack, while the country’s prime minister has vowed to take measures to protect civilians.

In his statement, President Aoun called on the international community to take action to prevent such incidents, emphasizing the need for Israel to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Aoun also expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the United States in brokering the Framework Agreement, while criticizing Israel’s actions as a “blow to the negotiation process.”

As tensions continue to simmer along the Israel-Lebanon border, both sides remain committed to finding a negotiated solution to their differences. However, the recent attacks by Israel have raised concerns that the agreement may be on the brink of collapse, and that a return to violence may be inevitable.
