The National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS) of Lebanon has published a damning report detailing the extent of Israeli airstrikes on the country between March 2nd and April 16th. The report, released by the council’s Secretary-General, provides a detailed breakdown of the devastating aerial attacks, underscoring the significant escalation of tensions in the region.
According to the report, the Israeli military launched a total of 8,200 airstrikes against various targets in Lebanon over the specified period, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life. The attacks, which primarily targeted infrastructure and civilian areas, were carried out in an apparent effort to deter Hezbollah, the Shia Islamist political party and militant group, from engaging in military activities in Syria.
The report highlights a stark increase in the frequency and intensity of Israeli aerial operations, with an average of approximately 260 sorties per day. This represents a significant uptick from previous periods, underscoring the increasingly complex and volatile security landscape in the region.
“Lebanon has been subjected to an unprecedented scale of Israeli aerial aggression, with the international community seemingly powerless to intervene,” stated the CNRS Secretary-General. “Our report provides concrete evidence of the Israeli military’s reckless disregard for civilian lives and infrastructure, as well as its determination to undermine the stability of the region.”
The report also notes a notable shift in the composition of targets, with a significant increase in strikes against civilian areas, such as residential neighborhoods, schools, and hospitals. This, along with the use of precision-guided munitions and other advanced military technologies, has led to a disproportionate number of civilian casualties and injuries.
International observers have long expressed concerns over the potential consequences of unchecked Israeli military action, with many calling for greater diplomatic engagement and a more robust response from regional actors. The report serves as a stark reminder of the need for sustained dialogue and cooperation to prevent further destabilization of the region.
The CNRS report is expected to be discussed at an upcoming meeting of the UN Security Council, where members are expected to address the situation in Lebanon and the implications for regional stability. In the meantime, the people of Lebanon will continue to bear the brunt of Israel’s aerial aggression, underscoring the urgent need for peace and stability in the region.
