Lebanon Participates in Middle East Peace Conference Amid High Tensions

Lebanon participated in the highly anticipated Middle East Peace Conference, held in Paris on January 15, 2023, amidst growing tensions in the region. Although Lebanon’s role in the conference was limited due to its internal struggles with the economy and other domestic issues, it still made its presence felt.

Lebanese officials, including the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Saad Hariri, participated in the conference as a gesture of solidarity with fellow Middle Eastern nations. However, it was not clear whether these Lebanese officials have the authority or the influence to implement any decisions made at the conference. Despite this, the attendance of these officials was seen as a diplomatic gesture of support for peace in the Middle East.

In a bid to address a long-standing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, world leaders convened at the conference, which aimed to bring about a peaceful resolution. Although some countries, including the US, have been supportive of a two-state solution in the past, many question whether the conditions are right for a peaceful agreement.

Lebanon’s involvement in the Middle East Peace Conference reflects its delicate balance between maintaining friendships with the regional powers that surround it and its own internal struggles. Lebanon’s fragile political and economic stability means that it has a limited capacity to contribute to the peace process, but participation is a diplomatic gesture indicating that it supports the overall goal of peace in the region.

However, the Lebanese government has not clarified what the long-term implications of the conference would be for Lebanon itself. Given the challenges it faces, including rising debt and a rapidly shrinking economy, the priority is more on managing the country’s internal crisis than on addressing its international obligations.

Despite the limitations, Lebanon’s participation sends a clear message that there is still a willingness from the Arab and regional world to pursue a peaceful solution to the Middle East conflict. However, Lebanon’s contribution and support, or more specifically the impact that Lebanon can achieve, still remains uncertain. Given the challenges it is currently experiencing, Lebanon’s contribution might have been more impactful if its internal challenges were addressed before it could fully focus on this significant international event.
