A picturesque hilltop village in southern Lebanon was caught off guard by severe flash flooding last week as heavy rainfall swept through the region. The once-quaint surroundings of Ali-Al Taher Hill were ravaged by torrential downpours that turned serene streams into raging torrents, leaving behind devastating scenes of destruction.
According to eyewitness accounts, the sudden and intense downpour, which started early in the morning, caught residents completely off guard. Residents described the experience as ‘surreal’ as the normally tranquil village found itself on the receiving end of unrelenting fury from Mother Nature. Heavy rainwater poured down from nearby hills and streamed across agricultural fields, roads, and homes.
“It’s an extraordinary sight, unlike anything we have ever seen before,” said eyewitness Ali Al-Hajj, describing the chaos that unfolded. “The once-pristine roads have been reduced to rivers, and nearby structures were severely damaged.”
Local authorities scrambled to respond to the crisis as heavy traffic was diverted, and rescue efforts were put into place to assist affected residents. Emergency responders and first responders battled against the relentless onslaught, risking their own lives to save others.
“This is not the first instance of such a crisis, and it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of investing in Lebanon’s infrastructure to mitigate the effects of extreme weather,” said an official from the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, adding that efforts are underway to assess damage and restore critical infrastructure.
