Lebanon’s Maritime Realm Under International Naval Presence Escalation

Lebanon’s territorial waters have become a focal point of international naval activity with an escalating presence of vessels from various countries, sparking concerns about their purposes and potential implications for regional security. Journalist Tamjeed Qubaisi of Al-Akhbar newspaper reported on an array of naval ships observed off the Lebanese coast, revealing a complex picture of international military involvement.

Among the identified vessels is the French destroyer “Aquitaine Class,” specializing in aerial target detection and surveillance, as well as the British “Daring” destroyer, which utilizes the “S1850” radar system to detect long-range aerial targets. Also spotted were a German destroyer, frigate, and minesweeper; the Italian destroyer “ANDREA Doria,” equipped with the same radar system as the British vessel; and the Greek “Hydra Class” frigate, which focuses on monitoring aerial activity.

The recorded presence of Israeli warships and naval vessels from the “Sa’ar 5” and “Sa’ar 6” classes has garnered specific attention. Additionally, an American destroyer “Arleigh Burke” has been positioned off the coast of occupied Palestine, relying on the “Aegis” system to detect and intercept ballistic missiles, alongside several reconnaissance and support ships.

In a response to Al-Akhbar’s inquiries regarding the purpose behind the observed naval vessels, UNIFIL military public information officer Major Raffaele Avolio denied any connection between the deployments and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The vessels are thus attributed to the respective national navies involved, operating either under their own missions or as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

This increased naval activity in the region is raising pertinent questions regarding the roles the vessels are fulfilling, particularly regarding the activation of “network-centric warfare” in naval operations. Potential implications include the strengthening of early warning systems and air defenses for the Israeli enemy, potentially through target detection and tracking, or even the possibility of direct military or technical interception.

A previously reported incident, which apparently took place during the 2024 aggression, exemplifies the type of scenarios under question. According to reports, a German destroyer played a role in intercepting a resistance drone. Such events serve as a starting point for discussion regarding the consequences of an escalating naval presence in Lebanon, underscoring the necessity for clear understanding and open communication between regional states and international organizations regarding military intentions and operations.
