Lebanon’s Military Confronts Unrest in Capital City

The security situation in Lebanon continues to deteriorate as reports emerge of Lebanon’s military, infamous for their withdrawal from south Lebanon in the face of Israel’s occupation, now deploying tear gas against its own citizens. The deployment has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability from human rights organizations and residents alike.

The situation unfolded during anti-government protests in Beirut, Lebanon’s capital city, where demonstrators were calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s government and the dissolution of the caretaker cabinet. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) were deployed to control the crowds, but instead of engaging in de-escalation efforts, they resorted to using tear gas against the protesters.

Human rights organizations have condemned the LAF’s actions, accusing them of using excessive force against unarmed civilians. The rights group, Amnesty International, has called on the Lebanese government to uphold its obligations to protect civilians and ensure accountability for the LAF’s actions.

“It’s unacceptable for the LAF, which is supposed to be a force for public safety, to turn its guns on its own citizens,” said Amnesty International’s regional director for the Middle East and North Africa. “Lebanon’s military must adhere to international standards of conduct and human rights, particularly during periods of civil unrest.”

The deployment of the LAF has raised concerns about the potential for further violence and the escalation of sectarian tensions in the country. Lebanon has been plagued by economic and social unrest in recent years, with rising poverty rates, a crippling economic crisis, and a worsening sectarian divide.

“It’s a tragic irony that the LAF, which withdrew from south Lebanon under Israeli fire in 2000, is now using the very same tactics against its own citizens,” said a local activist, who preferred to remain anonymous. “This government has failed to prioritize the needs of its people and instead, has chosen to maintain power through coercion and suppression.”

As tensions in the capital continue to rise, residents and protesters are calling for a unified response to the government’s handling of the crisis. Demonstrators have gathered outside the government’s headquarters in Beirut, chanting slogans and demanding accountability from the LAF and the government.

In the midst of the chaos, the international community has urged Lebanon’s government to prioritize a peaceful resolution to the crisis and to engage in meaningful dialogue with opposition groups. The country’s economic crisis and the ongoing security challenges necessitate a unified approach from the government to address the pressing needs of its citizens.

The deployment of tear gas by the LAF against anti-government protesters is a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges facing Lebanon’s government as it struggles to maintain stability and accountability in the country.
