LIBYA CRISIS: US SECRETARY OF STATE RUBIO DITCHES MEETING WITH LIBYAN MILITIA LEADER

In a move that has sparked diplomatic tensions, US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has declined to meet with Libya’s Deputy Defense Minister, Abdulsalam al-Zoubi, during his recent visit to Washington. According to sources acquainted with the matter, the decision was taken after US officials formed a negative impression of al-Zoubi, the leader of the Libya Shield Forces (LSF) militia, which has been accused of perpetuating violence and human rights abuses in the North African country.

Rubio’s visit to Washington was reportedly focused on strengthening Libyan-American ties and securing commitments from the international community in support of the Tripoli government’s efforts to stabilize the war-torn nation. However, the abrupt cancellation of the meeting with al-Zoubi has raised concerns about the efficacy of these diplomatic efforts and the US’s stance on Libya’s internal conflicts.

Libya has been embroiled in a protracted civil war, with various armed groups vying for control and competing interests. The LSF, led by al-Zoubi, has been a key player in this conflict, with its history of violence and alleged abuses against civilians and rival militias. US officials, by declining to meet with al-Zoubi, may be signaling that they view the LSF as an unsuitable interlocutor for peaceful negotiations and may instead prefer to deal with more moderate factions within the Libyan government.

Sources indicate that the US administration has, on more than one occasion, sought a more substantial and credible interlocutor within Libya’s warring factions, particularly one that has demonstrated a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue and prioritize the stability of the country. This perspective seems to have been absent from the US’s assessment of al-Zoubi and the LSF, leading to the decision not to meet with the Deputy Defense Minister.

The cancellation of the meeting is not only a setback for the US’s diplomatic efforts but also a reflection of the complex and often contentious dynamics at play within Libyan politics. As the international community continues to grapple with the ongoing crisis in Libya, it remains to be seen how the US will navigate its relationships with various factions and stakeholders in the country. One thing is certain, however – the absence of a clear and coherent US strategy has left many questions unanswered, and the road to stability in Libya looks increasingly uncertain.
