LINA MOUNZER EXPOSES ISRAEL’S DELIBERATE ERASURE OF LEBanese VILLAGES

Israel’s military operations in southern Lebanon continue to raise grave concerns regarding human rights, international law, and the disproportionate targeting of civilian infrastructure. According to Lina Mounzer, Senior Editor and Essayist at The Markaz Review, entire villages in southern Lebanon are being deliberately erased from the map, leaving behind devastating consequences for the local population.

“Israel’s tactics have shifted beyond mere airstrikes to include forced expulsions and extensive bombing campaigns,” Mounzer asserts. “The systematic approach has resulted in the destruction of buildings, homes, and businesses, leaving many without access to basic necessities such as shelter, food, and healthcare.”

In an effort to understand the scale of the devastation, I spoke with Mounzer at length, who drew attention to a lesser-known aspect of the conflict: the targeting of towns in southern Lebanon, which has thus far received relatively little coverage. “The international community seems to be fixating on Beirut, while completely ignoring the ongoing massacres and systematic destruction of infrastructure in the south,” Mounzer observed.

Mounzer went on to explain that military bulldozer operators are incentivized to destroy buildings by being paid per structure leveled. The use of such explicit targeting methods serves to further underscore the Israeli government’s deliberate intent to erase entire towns from the Lebanese map.

“Southern Lebanon is the country’s agricultural heartland, with over one million people calling it home,” Mounzer emphasized. “The region’s rich history and culture are built upon generations worth of traditions and customs. To see it systematically erased is nothing short of tragic.”

Mounzer is not the only voice expressing concern regarding the ongoing crisis. Various international human rights organizations have also issued statements criticizing the Israeli government’s actions in southern Lebanon, citing the gross contravention of international law and the fundamental right to human life.

While some may view the situation unfolding in southern Lebanon as an inevitable consequence of regional tensions, Mounzer is keen to highlight the need for increased awareness and attention from the global community. Given the immense human cost of ongoing violence, Mounzer calls for sustained coverage of the ongoing crisis. “We must amplify the voices of those who are suffering and shed light on the systematic destruction being carried out by Israel’s military in southern Lebanon.”
