Local Government Agency Announces Major Upgrade to Renewable Energy Infrastructure

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works has announced a significant expansion to the county’s renewable energy infrastructure, which aims to increase energy independence and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to reports, the Department has partnered with two major renewable energy companies, Evergreen Energy and GreenTech Solutions, to develop new solar farms and wind turbines across the county.

Under the proposed plan, six new solar farms will be constructed in various locations throughout Los Angeles County, with a total capacity of 300 megawatts of clean energy. Additionally, three new wind turbines will be installed in the San Gabriel Mountains, generating an additional 120 megawatts of electricity. This will bring the total renewable energy capacity of the county to 1.5 gigawatts, accounting for about 20% of the county’s total energy needs.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works has stated that the upgrade to renewable energy infrastructure is part of the county’s larger strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet its 2050 net-zero emissions target. The Department estimates that the new solar farms and wind turbines will save the county an estimated 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of 40,000 cars.

The proposed plan has received widespread support from local community leaders and environmental groups. “This is a crucial step towards a more sustainable future for Los Angeles County,” said Maria Garcia, Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Environmental Coalition. “We applaud the Department of Public Works for its commitment to renewable energy and look forward to seeing the benefits of this project come to fruition.”

The Department has stated that construction on the new solar farms and wind turbines is expected to begin in the summer of 2024, with completion scheduled for the early 2026. The project will be funded through a combination of public and private sector investments, with the county committing $50 million in initial funding.

As the demand for clean energy continues to rise, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works’ commitment to renewable energy infrastructure is a positive step towards a more sustainable future for the region. While the project still requires final regulatory approvals, the announcement marks an important milestone in the county’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact and transition to a more resilient and climate-resilient energy system.
