In a significant development for European defense capabilities, Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint production facility for ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) tactical ballistic missiles at Rheinmetall’s facility in Unterlüss, Lower Saxony, Germany. This partnership signifies a major milestone in the strengthening of transatlantic defense cooperation and the first instance of ATACMS production outside the United States.
According to sources, the production line is set to begin operation in 2027, with initial production volume estimates foreseeing the manufacturing of 600-800 units per annum by 2029. This collaborative effort between the two prominent defense companies will ensure a stable supply of ATACMS missiles to European militaries, thereby bolstering regional security.
The ATACMS missile system has garnered significant attention in recent years, particularly due to its ability to be launched from a variety of platforms, including the M142 HIMARS and M270 MLRS (alongside European variants such as the M270A1, MARS II, LRU, and M270B1). Presently, there are approximately 250 of these systems deployed across Europe, with this number expected to surge to around 800-1000 by 2030, with over 500 units scheduled for Poland.
The joint production facility represents a significant step towards enhanced European defense capabilities, underscoring the strategic importance of transatlantic cooperation in addressing regional security concerns. Furthermore, this partnership showcases the commitment of both Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall to supporting the evolving defense needs of European nations, particularly those in the face of emerging threats in Eastern Europe.
This development also underscores the growing importance of Germany as a hub for European defense production and a crucial node in the region’s defense supply chain. With the production of ATACMS missiles, Rheinmetall’s facility in Unterlüss will become a key player in the region’s defense industry, cementing Germany’s position as a vital partner in European defense efforts.
The memorandum of understanding between Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall marks a significant milestone in the strengthening of European defense capabilities and highlights the ongoing commitment of both companies to supporting the evolving defense needs of European nations.
