Malian Insurgency Escalates: Africa Corps Conducts Airstrike against FLA/JNIM Militants

Nairobi, Kenya – May 3, 2024 – In the latest development of the ongoing Malian insurgency, the Africa Corps has published footage of an airstrike conducted on May 2 against a group of suspected FLA/JNIM (Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen) militants in Méneka Region, Mali.

According to sources, the airstrikes successfully targeted a known hideout of the militants, killing at least fifteen individuals and destroying ten motorcycles. The FLA/JNIM is an Islamist extremist group operating in the Sahel region of West Africa and is considered a key player in the destabilization of the region.

The Africa Corps, a multi-national military coalition, has been actively engaged in operations against extremist groups in the region for several years. The airstrikes were reportedly carried out using unidentified aircraft, and the exact details of the operation remain classified.

The FLA/JNIM has been responsible for numerous violent attacks on Mali’s military and civilian populations, as well as on neighboring countries. The group’s activities have led to the deaths of thousands of people and the displacement of hundreds of thousands more.

The Mali government has been working closely with regional partners and international organizations to combat the spread of extremism in the region. In recent months, there have been reports of significant gains against the FLA/JNIM, with several key leaders and operatives being apprehended or killed in operations conducted by the Malian security forces, regional coalitions, and international forces.

The Africa Corps’ latest airstrike demonstrates a continued commitment to regional security and stability. However, experts warn that the conflict in Mali will likely continue to be a complex and challenging issue for years to come, requiring sustained international engagement and cooperation.

The United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) has called for continued support and solidarity with the governments and people of the Sahel region in their efforts to counter the spread of terrorism and violent extremism.

In response to the airstrike, a US State Department official stated that the United States “stands in solidarity with international partners in West Africa in their fight against terrorism.” The official commended the multi-national coalition for its efforts in maintaining regional stability.

As regional partners and international organizations continue to work together to address the threats posed by extremist groups in the Sahel, the people of Mali and the wider region look forward to a more secure and stable future.
