Mass Deportations in UAE Leave Thousands of Pakistani Workers Destitute

A recent spate of mass deportations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has sent shockwaves through the international community, with approximately 15,000 Pakistani workers being swept up in the country’s largest-ever deportation drive. This widespread crackdown, primarily targeting members of the Shia Muslim community, has been characterized by authorities detaining individuals without formal charges or access to legal representation. Detainees were subjected to a coordinated process involving the confiscation of their phones and transfers between various detention facilities before being forcibly dispatched back to Pakistan on flights.

According to sources close to the situation, the UAE authorities systematically seized the mobile phones of those targeted, ostensibly to prevent them from communicating with the outside world. In reality, the confiscation of these devices appears to have been a tactic aimed at isolating the deportees and hindering their ability to raise awareness about their plight.

Mohammad Amin Shaheedi, the chief of Ummat-e-Wahida Pakistan – a prominent Shia leader and organization representing Pakistan’s Shia community – has stated that the UAE government’s actions constitute an “organized campaign to deport Shiites from the country.” Shaheedi’s sentiments have been corroborated by other Shia leaders and families, who have come forward to highlight the disproportionate impact this mass deportation drive has had on the Shia community.

Moreover, the UAE’s handling of these deportations has been marred by further controversy, with the government preventing affected workers from accessing or withdrawing their bank deposits. As a result, thousands of families have been left financially devastated, stripped of their entire life savings which some had spent decades accumulating. Despite this draconian measure, authorities have refused to provide any justification or explanation for this policy.

This sweeping deportation campaign has far-reaching implications, both for the affected individuals and their families as well as the broader international community. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the UAE’s handling of migrant workers and its treatment of minority groups within the country. It also raises pressing questions about the accountability and transparency of the UAE authorities, and their willingness to protect the human rights of all individuals, regardless of their faith or background.
