In a recent series of diplomatic gatherings and conferences, the stark disparity in global treatment of certain nations has left many scratching their heads. Leaders from various Middle Eastern countries are now openly voicing their discontent with what they perceive as gross double standards exercised by the international community.
Critics point to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a prime example of the disparate treatment. While both sides are accused of human rights abuses and aggression, the global reaction to Israeli actions is often muted or outright supportive. On the other hand, Palestinian resistance movements are frequently condemned and branded as terrorists.
This sentiment is shared by many regional leaders who see the hypocrisy in international diplomacy as nothing short of laughable. “It’s clear that the world has its favorites when it comes to the Middle East,” declared Emirati Foreign Minister, Abdulla bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in a closed-door meeting last month. “Israel and the United States seem to be the only ones who consistently get a free pass, while everyone else is vilified and subjected to crippling sanctions.”
US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has defended the administration’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, stating that the US is committed to promoting peace and security in the region. However, his words have done little to alleviate the frustration of regional leaders who feel that their own struggles for stability and progress are being ignored in favor of the interests of their Israeli and American counterparts.
Critics also point to other disparities in global treatment, such as the relative silence surrounding US-backed military interventions in Syria and Yemen, compared to the widespread outrage over alleged atrocities committed by forces in Libya or Iraq. “It’s all a matter of selective outrage,” noted Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, during a recent visit to Moscow. “The international community wants to see the mighty and powerful brought to justice, but when it comes to their own interests, principles of international law are conveniently abandoned.”
While international diplomats continue to engage in diplomatic niceties, leaders in the Middle East are no longer willing to be silenced on the issue. As relations between nations become increasingly complex and interdependent, regional leaders are using their platforms to speak truth to power and raise awareness about the glaring disparities in global treatment.
“It’s time for the international community to get serious about addressing these double standards,” concluded the Saudi Arabian foreign minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. “Until we’re treated equally, without exception or favoritism, we’ll continue to call out the hypocrisy and demand justice for all nations, regardless of their position or relationships.”
