At least 10 people have been injured, some critically, after a vehicle ploughed into a crowd in the historical center of Modena, a city in northern Italy, on Tuesday morning. According to reports, the driver deliberately targeted pedestrians on Via Campi, a key commercial street, causing widespread panic and destruction.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the vehicle sped out of control, swerving around other cars before hitting a group of people gathered near a popular outdoor café. Authorities stated that the vehicle then slammed into the front of a nearby shop, causing significant damage to the building.
A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted the terrifying moments following the incident: “I was on my way to work when I heard a loud screeching noise. I turned around to see the vehicle running over people. It was a chaotic scene. Panic was palpable.”
As the driver exited the vehicle, a shop owner, reportedly aged 30, attempted to intervene and stop the individual from further causing harm. However, the driver proceeded to pull out a knife and stabbed the shop owner. He is currently receiving medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Italian media reported that authorities quickly arrived at the scene and apprehended the driver, who has not been publicly identified. The exact motives behind the vehicle attack are still unclear. Investigations are ongoing and being led by local and regional authorities.
Following the incident, authorities rushed to provide medical assistance to those injured. Multiple ambulances and emergency services teams arrived on the scene and evacuated the victims to nearby hospitals for treatment.
This incident has left the community shaken and has prompted an outpouring of concern for the well-being of those affected. Local leaders have issued appeals for calm and have called for citizens to cooperate with the ongoing investigations.
As the search for answers and motives continues, the incident has also sparked conversations about road safety and the need for improved measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
