At least 12 Pakistani policemen succumbed to their injuries after a devastating car bombing struck a police post in the northwestern city of Bannu on Wednesday. The targeted attack, which was followed by an ensuing clash with militants, left a trail of destruction and loss of life.
Eyewitnesses described the blast as ‘massive’ and claimed that it caused widespread damage to the area. The police post, which was situated in the heart of the densely populated city, was the main target of the attack. The bomb-laden vehicle, identified as a passenger van, detonated at around 6:30 am in the morning, engulfing the surrounding area in flames.
Following the bombing, a group of militants is said to have opened fire on the police personnel who responded to the blast, further exacerbating the situation. The intense shootout led to the deaths of several police officers and militants, with the latter allegedly attempting to escape the scene. However, security forces quickly regained control of the situation and launched a cordon and search operation to hunt down the escaped militants.
As per reports, three police personnel who were initially reported missing were later found alive and rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Their condition remains stable, with officials describing their ordeal as ‘traumatic.’
Preliminary investigations suggest that the attack might have been carried out by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant group, which has been responsible for several high-profile attacks in the country’s northwestern provinces. The TTP, a splinter group of the Afghan Taliban, has been waging a low-grade insurgency against the Pakistani state for years, demanding greater autonomy and enforcement of sharia law.
The Bannu attack marks the 13th major security incident in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province since the start of the year. The rising tide of violence has left the local administration scrambling to contain the situation and avert further violence. In a statement, a spokesperson for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police announced that the investigation into the incident is underway and vowed to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The attack comes at a time when the Pakistani government is pushing forward with a nationwide crackdown on extremist groups. While officials remain tight-lipped about the specifics of the operation, it is believed that the intelligence-driven campaign is aimed at dismantling militant networks in the country’s troubled regions.
The incident has left a somber mood in the city, with residents expressing their deep concern over the rising levels of violence. “We’re fed up with these attacks,” said one local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity. “We want peace and security, not just for ourselves but for our children.”
