Beirut, Lebanon (AFP) – A spate of Israeli airstrikes has struck southern Lebanon, targeting multiple towns along the border, in what authorities describe as a significant escalation of military operations.
According to eyewitness accounts, the airstrikes, which began in early morning hours, focused on the towns of Kafra, Rashkananiyeh, Debbine, and Burj Al Shemali. Residents in these areas reported hearing heavy explosions, which shook buildings and sent panicked civilians scrambling for shelter.
Lebanese military officials confirmed the airstrikes, stating that Israeli warplanes breached Lebanese airspace, targeting the identified towns. Witnesses described the strikes as intense, with multiple explosions observed within a relatively short period.
The latest attacks follow a long-simmering dispute between Israel and Lebanon, with tensions remaining high over border security and alleged Hezbollah involvement in the region.
“We have been warning the international community of the escalating situation for months, and yet, these airstrikes demonstrate an alarming level of disregard for civilian life and sovereignty,” a Lebanese official said, requesting anonymity.
The Israeli military has not officially commented on the airstrikes, although officials from the Israeli military have hinted at increasing tensions with Hezbollah and the potential for future military action.
As a result of these airstrikes, at least four residents have been reported injured, while multiple casualties are feared. Authorities have called for calm, while warning against potential retaliatory actions.
The international community has expressed concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East. In response to the airstrikes, the United Nations has called an emergency meeting to address the deteriorating security situation in the region.
Meanwhile, residents of the affected towns are coming to terms with the latest wave of violence, which has left many shaken.
“We thought we had seen the worst of it over the past few years, but it seems the situation is only worsening,” said an elderly resident of Debbine, who wished to remain anonymous.
The continued military operations raise concerns about the long-term implications for regional stability. As negotiations falter, tensions between Lebanon, Israel, and the broader Middle East region show no signs of abating.
As the region grapples with the aftermath of the airstrikes, all parties involved will be carefully watching the developments, with a tense and uncertain future on the horizon.
