In a significant diplomatic move ahead of an informal meeting of Southeast Asian foreign ministers, Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe met with Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow in Bangkok yesterday.

According to sources close to the meeting, Tin Maung Swe and Sihasak Phuangketkeow held extensive discussions on broadening Myanmar-Thailand bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, and cultural exchanges. They also touched upon the importance of enhanced cooperation within ASEAN to address pressing regional challenges, including terrorism, piracy, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
This latest development comes at a time when ASEAN countries are working to build resilience in the face of growing external security threats. Thailand, as the host country of this year’s ASEAN summit, has been actively courting Myanmar, a key player in the regional bloc, to boost ties and foster increased collaboration on regional issues.
Sources within the Thai Foreign Ministry said Sihasak Phuangketkeow expressed the Thai government’s commitment to supporting Myanmar’s economic and social development, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, trade, and investment. Tin Maung Swe, in response, acknowledged the Thai government’s efforts in providing humanitarian assistance to Myanmar in recent years and expressed gratitude for the continued support.
Myanmar-Thailand relations have experienced periods of strain in the past, particularly over issues related to the Rohingya refugee crisis. However, sources say that discussions during the recent meeting suggested a significant shift in the overall dynamics of the bilateral relationship, with both sides expressing a common desire to strengthen ties and build trust.
