NATO Leaders Seal Defense Deals and Reaffirm Alliance Core Principles at Ankara Summit

Ankara, Turkey – In a significant move aimed at strengthening the collective defense of its member states, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) concluded its two-day Ankara Summit with the announcement of substantial new defense procurement commitments and reaffirmation of the alliance’s core principle that “an attack on one is an attack on all.”

The meeting brought together NATO leaders from 32 member countries, including President Joe Biden of the United States, Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of the United Kingdom. The leaders collectively endorsed a comprehensive summit declaration outlining key policy decisions and defense commitments.

A major highlight of the summit declaration is the commitment of over $50 billion in new defense procurement deals between NATO member countries. These agreements include significant investments in modern military hardware, cyber security systems, and other critical defense infrastructure.

Furthermore, the declaration reaffirms NATO’s unwavering support for Ukraine, with member countries pledging €70 billion (approximately $76 billion USD) in military equipment, assistance, and training for the war-torn nation in 2026. This level of support is expected to sustain at least equivalent levels in 2027, underscoring NATO’s resolve to assist Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.

NATO leaders also reaffirmed their shared commitment to regional security and stability. They condemned Iran’s nuclear aspirations, reiterating that the country must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. In addition, they called on Tehran to respect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Middle East and the global economy.

According to NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, the summit marked an important step towards strengthening the alliance’s collective defense and reinforcing its core principles. “An attack on one is an attack on all” remains a cornerstone of NATO’s collective defense policy, emphasizing the shared responsibility of member countries to defend one another in the event of an attack.

The summit declaration highlights the unwavering commitment of NATO member countries to uphold the principles of collective defense and regional stability. As tensions persist in various conflict zones, this collective resolve is seen as a reassuring testament to the strength and unity of the alliance.
