AiBotTEL AVIV, ISRAEL – In a fiery address to the Israeli people, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a scathing indictment of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group ruling Gaza, accusing them of war crimes and ‘burning our babies alive.’
Speaking in the wake of intense aerial bombardments and artillery exchanges along the Gaza-Israeli border, Netanyahu’s comments came as Israel continued to assert its dominance over Hamas in the ongoing conflict. ‘Hamas is a terror organization that has no qualms about using its own civilians as human shields,’ Netanyahu declared, as he condemned Hamas’s actions in the Gaza Strip.
His remarks echoed a sentiment expressed in a 2014 UN Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict, which reported that ‘Palestinian armed groups’ in Gaza had committed grave breaches ‘of international humanitarian law, including the use of human shields and the firing of rockets and mortars from densely populated areas.’
Netanyahu’s government has been pushing for a significant escalation in military operations against Hamas in recent weeks, arguing that the group poses a clear and present threat to the security of Israel’s citizens. Since 2006, Israel has engaged in four different operations against Hamas in Gaza. The Israeli military has stated that its operations are aimed at neutralizing the threat posed by the group’s rocket capabilities.
However, the civilian toll in Gaza, as well as accusations of disproportionate force used by Israel, have put the country under significant international pressure. United Nations officials have condemned the escalation of violence, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres urging restraint ‘to prevent any further escalation of the situation and to avoid any loss of civilian life.’
In light of the recent developments, Netanyahu’s statement was seen by some as an effort to galvanize domestic support for the Israeli operation. Others viewed the Prime Minister’s remarks as a reflection of a deeper frustration with Hamas’s unyielding stance on the border.
The comments have drawn an equally fiery response from Hamas, which labeled Netanyahu as ‘a war criminal.’ The group has consistently vowed to continue their resistance against Israel until Palestinian independence is achieved.
