In a significant move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to maintaining its security zone in southern Lebanon, citing the continued threat posed by Hezbollah and Iran’s meddling in regional affairs.
“This is a great achievement, and we will maintain it as long as Hezbollah is not disarmed, as long as a threat to the State of Israel exists,” Netanyahu stated in a recent address, underscoring the long-standing concern over the militant group’s activities along the Israel-Lebanon border.
The Prime Minister’s comments come amidst a broader regional dynamic, with Iran attempting to exert influence in Lebanon through various proxy forces, including Hezbollah. Netanyahu described Iran’s actions as an attempt to “force us into a withdrawal by force from southern Lebanon,” highlighting the Israeli government’s determination to push back against this effort.
“Israel, Lebanon, and the United States are effectively sending a message to Iran – this is none of your business,” Netanyahu said, emphasizing the need for regional actors to respect established borders and cease interfering in the affairs of other nations.
In a separate development, the Israeli government has announced plans to allow the Lebanese army to begin taking control of specific areas within the expanded security zone, as recommended by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Two pilot zones have been identified for this purpose, one located entirely outside the security zone, south of the Litani River, and the second situated north of the Litani, covering a small portion of the expanded zone that has been deemed unnecessary for the IDF’s operations.
Notably, while allowing the Lebanese army to assert its presence, Netanyahu stressed that Israel will continue to maintain strict control over the original security zone, preventing Hezbollah and civilian population access. This approach ensures the zone remains outside the effective anti-tank range, minimizing the risk of violence and potential escalation.
Netanyahu’s declaration underscores the Israeli government’s unwavering commitment to protecting its citizens from the perceived threats emanating from Hezbollah and its patron, Iran. The Prime Minister’s stance serves as a clear warning to regional actors regarding the need to respect established boundaries and avoid intervening in the affairs of other nations.
