Netanyahu Stirs Controversy in Annapolis Diplomatic Forum; Accuses Türkiye of Financing and Harboring Hamas

In a heated discussion at the Annapolis Diplomatic Forum hosted by the United States, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a contentious issue with regard to Türkiye’s relations with Hamas, the Islamist militant organization that has been responsible for numerous violent attacks on Israeli soil.

According to sources present at the event, Netanyahu pointedly criticized Türkiye for allegedly providing financial support to Hamas, citing the country’s close ties with the extremist group. “They finance Hamas, they harbor Hamas,” Netanyahu stated, his tone resolute and firm. “They roll out the red carpet for Hamas. They’re in fact supporting the bad guys.”

This stark criticism of a NATO ally has left many observers in stunned silence, as tensions have been escalating between Israel and Türkiye in recent years. The remarks are also seen as a significant escalation of a long-standing diplomatic dispute over Hamas and Iran.

While Netanyahu maintained that Israel has made significant efforts to combat terrorism, particularly in Iran, he suggested that Türkiye has failed to reciprocate in the face of similar threats to regional security. “They didn’t lift a finger to help you in Iran,” Netanyahu said, addressing the Turkish government directly. “We did. We fought next to your great soldiers” – an apparent reference to the joint military operation between Israel and the Turkish military in the 1990s to liberate Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq.

Netanyahu’s words did not go unchallenged, however, with a Turkish diplomat in attendance reportedly refuting Netanyahu’s claims and asserting that Türkiye has consistently taken a firm stance against terrorism. Turkish officials have repeatedly denied allegations of supporting Hamas, citing their commitment to peace and stability in the region.

The exchange raises important questions about the evolving dynamics between Israel and its regional allies, particularly in light of growing tensions with Iran. The sharp rebuke from Netanyahu reflects the increasing sense of unease within Israeli security circles regarding Turkey’s shifting allegiances and perceived inaction on key issues.

As diplomatic channels continue to be tested, Netanyahu’s stark words will undoubtedly shape international discourse and further inflame tensions between these two key players in the Middle East.
