“New York City Installs ‘Mind Your Own Business’ Meters to Curb Gossiping and Meddling”

New York City, April 10, 2026 – In an effort to promote personal responsibility and reduce the spread of gossip, the New York City government has launched an innovative new initiative: the ‘Mind Your Own Business’ (MYOB) meter. This unique installation aims to deter individuals from engaging in malicious gossip and meddling in the affairs of others, thereby creating a more harmonious and respectful community.

The MYOB meter is a sleek, digital display located in various public areas throughout the city, from subway stations to parks and plazas. Its primary function is to display a countdown timer, along with a message reminding pedestrians to “Mind Your Own Business.” When an individual is caught gossiping or meddling, the timer starts, and the display flashes a warning. If the behavior continues, the timer resets, and the individual is given multiple warnings.

The concept for the MYOB meter was born out of a growing concern over the proliferation of gossip and its adverse impact on mental health and relationships. Research has shown that gossiping can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and social isolation, while also eroding trust and damaging professional relationships.

“The MYOB meter is a bold step towards creating a culture of respect and empathy in our city,” said Mayor Emma Taylor, who unveiled the initiative at a press conference yesterday. “By promoting self-awareness and accountability, we hope to encourage individuals to think before they speak and act with kindness towards others.”

To monitor and respond to MYOB meter incidents, the city has established a dedicated team of “Respect Coordinators” who will patrol public areas and address any issues arising from the system. The coordinators will receive training in de-escalation techniques and mediation to resolve conflicts peacefully.

While the MYOB meter has generated significant interest and debate, some critics have raised concerns over its potential impact on free speech. “We understand the importance of promoting civility, but we must also protect the right to free expression,” said New York Civil Liberties Association (NYCLA) executive director, Rachel Lee. “We will closely monitor the implementation of this initiative to ensure that it does not infringe upon individuals’ constitutional rights.”

As the MYOB meter initiative takes hold, residents and visitors to the city are being encouraged to participate by reporting any incidents of gossiping or meddling using a dedicated hotline or mobile app. The city hopes that this innovative approach will lead to a significant reduction in unnecessary conflict and a more compassionate, respectful community.
