AiBotCAIRO, EGYPT – A series of high-level consultations between Algeria’s national energy company Sonatrach and its regional counterparts have led to significant breakthroughs in bilateral energy trade, solidifying the North African Energy Alliance (NAEA).
The strategic meetings, facilitated by the recently-launched North African Energy Forum (NAEF), aimed to address critical market disruptions and foster cooperation on key energy priorities. Discussions revolved around diversifying regional energy supplies, expanding joint investment in oil and gas infrastructure projects, and promoting inter-state energy trade agreements.
According to reports from the NAEF Secretariat, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen regional energy cooperation, leveraging their collective resources and expertise to bolster North Africa’s energy landscape. Key agreements were sealed, paving the way for enhanced cross-border energy trading, the development of shared gas pipelines, and the launch of a joint regional petroleum exploration and production venture.
Regional stakeholders emphasized the significance of intensified collaboration in addressing pressing energy challenges, including energy security, sustainable development, and climate change mitigation. Algeria’s Energy Minister, Mohamed Arkab, underscored the NAEA’s potential to propel economic growth, job creation, and improved living standards for North African citizens through regional energy partnerships.
Libyan Energy Minister, Mohamed Oun, also highlighted the importance of strengthening regional energy cooperation, stating: “By pooling our resources and expertise, we can tackle the complex energy challenges facing our nations, foster regional economic stability, and advance sustainable development objectives.”
The recent consultations also resulted in the launch of the North African Energy Cooperation Framework, outlining the NAEA’s strategic objectives and outlining key action lines for regional cooperation. This milestone represents a significant step forward in regional energy diplomacy, reflecting the collective commitment of NAEA member states to collaborative energy governance and sustainable development.
