In a dramatic and secretive operation, over two dozen American and Nigerian special forces troops, including elite members of the US Navy’s Naval Special Warfare Development Group, also known as SEAL Team Six, conducted a daring nighttime raid on two islands in the far-northeastern region of Nigeria bordering Chad and Cameroon. The operation, revealed in a report by The New York Times citing three US officials, aimed to capture Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, a high-ranking operative of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), but ultimately ended in his death following a fierce battle.
According to sources, the combined American and Nigerian special forces team, numbering over 24 personnel, utilized helicopters to transport themselves to the targeted islands in Lake Chad for the covert operation. Their primary objective was to apprehend Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, a pivotal figure within ISWAP, and gather intelligence on the group’s activities.
However, the operatives were met with unexpected resistance from a formidable ISWAP force, estimated to comprise around three dozen fighters. For almost three hours, the US and Nigerian special forces engaged in an intense firefight against the ISWAP militants, struggling to capture Abu-Bilal al-Minuki alive.
“It soon became apparent that Abu-Bilal al-Minuki refused to surrender,” a US official informed The New York Times. Ultimately, after exhausting all avenues, American forces decided to employ precision airstrikes to eliminate the ISWAP leader. Unfortunately, the operation’s primary objective was not realized, and Abu-Bilal al-Minuki lost his life.
While the exact nature of the information obtained during the operation remains classified, officials indicate that the intelligence gathered will significantly contribute to a more effective strategy against ISWAP, whose violent campaign of terror has ravaged various regions across Nigeria, Chad, and Cameroon.
This operation underscores the ongoing US involvement in the global fight against terrorism and its cooperation with partner nations in Africa to root out extremist groups that continue to pose a threat to regional and global security. While the capture of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki was not achieved, the information gained and the skillful execution of the mission serve as a testament to the dedication and prowess of US and Nigerian special forces in this endeavor.
In a statement, US officials maintained that, while the operation was not without its complications, it remains a pivotal element of the broader struggle against terrorism in the region. Furthermore, cooperation between the US and Nigeria will continue to be critical in the shared pursuit of defeating extremist ideologies and restoring peace and stability across the affected areas.
