PACISTAN EYES NEW DIPLOMATIC OPENING AS IT DELIVERS IRANIAN PROPOSAL TO US

Pakistan has forwarded an updated version of Iran’s proposal to the United States, Islamabad sources told Reuters, in a move aiming to bring Islamabad and Washington closer and potentially ease regional tensions.

The proposal, according to sources, has undergone modifications to address United States concerns while seeking Pakistani cooperation on countering terrorism and stabilising the region. While no official details on the proposals have been disclosed, diplomats in Islamabad and Washington speculate that the updated version could lead to more effective counter-terrorism cooperation between the two countries.

Pakistan and Iran have enjoyed close diplomatic ties, with Pakistan supporting Iranian claims on the Jazireh-ye Tonb region in the Gulf, a move which was reciprocated by Iran when Pakistan lodged objections with the UN over India’s revocation of the autonomous status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan’s decision to forward the Iranian proposal comes as Islamabad struggles to maintain balance in a complicated regional environment. Pakistan’s relationships with the United States have long been strained due to disagreements over issues including the situation in Afghanistan, Pakistan-based counter-terrorism efforts, and US sanctions.

Sources indicate that Islamabad’s willingness to work with Tehran on this matter stems from a growing awareness that strengthened ties with regional neighbors may help counterbalance its strained relationship with both the United States and India. Pakistan aims to secure a more cooperative stance from Washington on pressing issues affecting its foreign and internal politics.

The exact terms of the revised proposal have not been disclosed. According to a source close to the negotiations, Pakistani officials have engaged with Iranian authorities to address Washington’s key demands including, inter alia, an updated strategy on terrorism and improved security coordination. It is also reported that efforts have been made to strengthen Pakistan’s cooperation with international anti-terrorism efforts.

It is understood that Islamabad and Washington are still engaged in diplomatic talks and have not yet reached a common ground on several contentious issues like military aid to Pakistan.
