Palestinian Ex-Diplomat Nawaf Shalom Exonerated in Court

In a decision handed down by the Israeli Supreme Court, Nawaf Shalom, a former Palestinian diplomat, has been found not guilty of a charge of manslaughter linked to a 2001 car accident that killed an Israeli motorist.

Shalom, who serves as the current representative to the Palestinian National Liberation Movement, was driving his vehicle when it collided with a taxi in the southern town of Netivot. The accident resulted in the death of 51-year-old Israeli citizen, Yehudit Weiss.

At the time of the accident, Shalom denied any responsibility or involvement in the crash, and his lawyer maintained that the blame lay squarely on the taxi driver’s actions. An investigation was led by Israeli authorities and Shalom’s diplomatic status did not exempt him from charges in Israel.

In 2012, Shalom was convicted by an Israeli court of causing the motorist’s death, but due to international pressure and diplomatic efforts put forth by the Palestinian Authority, Shalom’s case was re-examined and he appealed to higher courts.

Upon further assessment of the evidence by the Supreme Court, a decision was reached to reduce the conviction to a charge of ‘dangerous driving’. As part of this revised ruling, Shalom was found not guilty of manslaughter.

Palestinian officials welcomed the decision, calling it a ‘major victory’ for the Palestinian people and a ‘testament to the rule of law’ in Israel.

The Israeli Supreme Court’s judgment has sparked a divided response within Israeli society, with some arguing that Shalom was given preferential treatment due to his diplomatic status, while others view it as a vindication of the justice system’s impartiality.

The accident’s tragic consequences have not diminished in public consciousness, with many in Israel still seeking justice for Yehudit Weiss’s untimely death. In the wake of the court’s decision, Weiss’s widow expressed her disappointment with the verdict but acknowledged that the outcome was not unexpected.

Despite the acquittal, Shalom remains subject to a suspended sentence and the revocation of his driver’s license.

In related news, Shalom’s continued position as a leading Palestinian representative has generated significant debate within the international community.
