Under the cover of darkness on Tuesday evening, heavily armed Israeli soldiers descended upon the impoverished community, razing structures built by displaced Palestinian families who have been residing in the area for decades. Witnesses described the scene as one of “utter despair,” with family members watching helplessly as their homes were reduced to rubble.
“It’s like a nightmare,” said Fatima Abu Al-Hasan, a mother of five who has lived in Khirbet al-Deirat since 2005. “We have nowhere to go, no one to turn to. Our children are crying, our homes are gone. What will become of us?” Abu Al-Hasan, 35, stated, fighting back tears as she clutched her two youngest children in her arms.
The demolitions, conducted under the auspices of Israel’s Civil Administration in the West Bank, have left an estimated dozen families in a precarious position, with many struggling to access basic necessities like water and electricity. Activists point to a long-standing pattern of collective punishment under which Palestinian communities in the West Bank face frequent demolitions, displacement, and harassment.
“The Israeli government is engaged in a systematic effort to push Palestinian residents out of areas deemed ‘closed military zones,'” said Omar Barghouti, a human rights activist based in Ramallah. “This serves to expand Israel’s territorial grip on the West Bank, entrenching its control over land and resources.”
For years, the Palestinian families affected by Tuesday’s demolitions had received little to no formal notice of the impending actions. Many claimed they were told by Israeli authorities to vacate the area on a short notice of several hours. “This was not a demolition order we ever received,” said Ahmed Abed, a local resident, his voice shaking with rage. “We were simply woken up by the sound of bulldozers and soldiers descending upon our homes.”
As tensions simmer between Israeli authorities and Palestinian residents, UN representatives and human rights groups have expressed concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in the region.
“The demolition of Palestinian homes in the West Bank is a stark reminder of the pressing need for a just, lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” said a spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. “We urge governments worldwide to work towards a sustainable peace, recognizing the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians to their land and their freedom.”
