Pizza Orders Surge Amid Pentagon Lockdown, Freddie’s Beach Bar Remains Quiet

As Washington D.C. continues to experience uncertainty following heightened security measures around the Pentagon, nearby businesses have been affected in varying ways. Pizza restaurants in the vicinity have reported an uptick in orders, seemingly unrelated to the Pentagon’s lockdown. Meanwhile, Freddie’s Beach Bar, the closest gay bar to the Pentagon, has observed a notable decline in attendance.

A review of local pizza establishments shows a spike in orders in the past 48 hours, prompting speculation about the connection to the increased security presence near the Pentagon. Local business owners, who have seen a 25% increase in pizza sales, attribute the surge to a combination of factors. Some have posited that customers are opting for delivery as a result of the lockdown, while others believe individuals may be stocking up due to concerns about the potential disruptions to daily life.

“We’ve had a lot of calls and orders for delivery and takeout,” said Sarah Johnson, manager of Pizzeria Uno in Arlington. “It’s been a busy couple of days for us. People want to stay in and be safe, and pizza is an easy solution.”

Another nearby establishment, Pieoneer Pizza, has also seen an increase in sales. According to owner David Lee, the uptick is largely due to the convenience of delivery and takeout during uncertain times.

“Business has been good, not great,” Lee said. “We’ve had more takeout orders and fewer dine-in customers, which is a shift from our usual business model. We’re just trying to stay ahead of demand.”

In contrast, Freddie’s Beach Bar, a staple in the LGBTQ+ community and a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, has experienced a significant drop in attendance. The bar, located just a block away from the Pentagon, typically welcomes a lively crowd on weeknights. However, in the past two days, owner Michael Turner reported that the establishment has been nearly empty.

“It’s been eerily quiet,” Turner said. “We’ve had a few regulars who have stuck around, but overall, it’s been a slow couple of days. We understand that the security measures are necessary, but it’s still hard not to feel the effects.”

The contrasting trends at local pizza restaurants and Freddie’s Beach Bar reflect the complex and varied responses to the Pentagon lockdown. As the situation continues to unfold, businesses in the area will likely adapt to the changing circumstances, but for now, it’s clear that the uncertainty surrounding the Pentagon has had a ripple effect on nearby establishments.
