Police Tensions Escalate as Turkish Opposition HQ Faces Leadership Dispute

Istanbul, Turkey – The headquarters of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) became the focal point of a contentious leadership dispute on Monday, as police began enforcing a court ruling that reinstated former chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and removed Özgür Özel from the leadership.

The ruling, which was made earlier this month, has been at the center of a power struggle within the party, with both sides refusing to budge. Kılıçdaroğlu’s lawyers requested state assistance in enforcing the decision, leading to a dramatic escalation of tensions. Police arrived at the party headquarters to serve the court ruling, towing vehicles and blocking roads in a bid to maintain order.

Eyewitness accounts revealed a chaotic scene, with citizens waiting near the building being met with water cannon by enforcement officers. Tragically, one person fell ill during the confrontation, adding to the growing sense of unease. Amid the turmoil, phone calls were exchanged between Kılıçdaroğlu and Özel, with delegations from both sides scheduled to meet at 14:00 local time in an attempt to broker a resolution.

However, internal divisions within the CHP appear to be as deep-seated as ever. Kılıçdaroğlu’s supporters among the party’s MPs urged him to reconsider plans to enter the party headquarters with police and instead opt for an extraordinary congress to be held “as soon as possible.” This approach, they argue, would provide a peaceful resolution to the leadership dispute.

In contrast, Özel’s backers view the court intervention as a “coup attempt” aimed at undermining their leader’s position. They remain steadfast in their demand for a congress to be convened within 45 days, arguing that this is the only way to restore order to the party.

As tensions at the CHP headquarters continue to simmer, the fate of Turkey’s opposition party remains uncertain. The country’s opposition will be watching closely to see whether the leadership dispute can be resolved peacefully or if the situation will continue to spiral out of control.
