Moscow, Russia – Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the country will continue to boost its strategic and tactical nuclear forces, while stressing that it does not aim to escalate into an arms race with other nations.
Speaking before the Russian Federal Assembly on Tuesday, Putin emphasized the importance of strengthening Russia’s nuclear capabilities in the face of perceived threats to national security. “It is important to continue to increase the level of preparation of strategic and tactical nuclear forces, and to develop all their components,” he said.
The comments come amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West, particularly in the wake of Moscow’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine. Western powers, including the United States and its NATO allies, have responded with economic sanctions and military support for Ukraine.
Putin’s comments on nuclear forces have raised concerns among international observers, including those in the NATO alliance. However, the Russian President appeared to downplay the prospect of an arms race, stating that Moscow does not intend to engage in such a competition.
“We do not intend to get drawn into an arms race,” Putin said, according to a transcript of his speech. “I mean, what is the result of such competition? The growth of military expenditure, the expansion of arsenal, a decrease in international stability and security – all this, in fact, benefits no one.”
Instead, Putin suggested that Russia’s emphasis on nuclear forces is focused on maintaining a balance of power and ensuring national security in a rapidly changing international environment. “The main objective is to ensure the country’s defensive capabilities, to maintain the balance of power, and to protect our interests and citizens,” he said.
The development of Russia’s nuclear forces is a major priority for the country, with significant investments in modernizing its arsenal, including the deployment of new, advanced nuclear-capable ballistic missiles. Western powers have expressed concerns about the scale and pace of Russia’s nuclear modernization efforts, which have accelerated in recent years.
In response to the heightened tensions between Moscow and the West, NATO has strengthened its military presence in Eastern Europe, including the deployment of troops and equipment to countries bordering Russia. While tensions between Russia and NATO remain high, Putin’s comments suggest that Moscow remains committed to maintaining a deterrent capability, rather than seeking to spark an arms race with the West.
