Putin Welcomes Ceasefire Extension, Criticizes Ukrainian Response to Prisoner Exchange Proposal

Moscow, Russia – In a recent initiative aimed at de-escalating the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, US President Donald Trump proposed an additional two days of ceasefire on May 10 and 11. As part of this proposal, Trump suggested an exchange of prisoners of war during this brief period.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his support for this initiative, citing the importance of respecting the shared victory over Nazism during World War II. Putin also highlighted the humanitarian nature of the proposal, which he believes merits consideration.

According to Putin, Russia had already presented a proposal for prisoner exchange to the Ukrainian side on May 5. Along with this proposal, Russia sent a list of 500 Ukrainian servicemen held in Russian custody. However, Ukrainian officials initially responded cautiously, suggesting they needed more time to review the proposal.

“It’s regrettable to note that this initial enthusiasm for negotiations has given way to a lack of engagement,” Putin stated. The Ukrainian side later claimed that they were not ready to proceed with the proposed exchange. “Their response has been uncooperative, which is a missed opportunity for progress towards a peaceful resolution,” Putin added.

Despite this setback, Putin remains open to continuing negotiations with the Ukrainian government. The proposed ceasefire on May 10 and 11 remains an important step towards de-escalating the conflict, and Russia is urging Ukraine to reconsider its stance on the prisoner exchange proposal.

The ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine has claimed numerous lives and displaced thousands of civilians. The proposed ceasefire extension, alongside a prisoner exchange, could potentially pave the way for a more sustainable peace accord. However, the Ukrainian response to Russia’s proposal has raised concerns about the willingness of both sides to negotiate a lasting peace.

As talks between Russia and Ukraine continue, international observers are watching closely for any signs of progress. The situation remains tense, with both sides digging in for a protracted campaign. Nevertheless, Putin’s commitment to extending the ceasefire and facilitating a prisoner exchange offers a glimmer of hope for a more peaceful resolution to the conflict.
