Russian President Vladimir Putin’s thinly veiled threats to remove Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have fallen flat, with many experts pointing out the hypocrisy in Putin’s words. The statement comes as tensions between Russia and Ukraine remain high, with both nations embroiled in a protracted conflict over Ukraine’s future sovereignty.
During a press conference earlier this week, Putin seemed to insinuate that Zelensky was little more than a puppet for the Kyiv regime. “A representative of the Kyiv regime,” Putin stated, in what many interpreted as a veiled threat aimed at undermining the embattled Ukrainian leader.
However, experts have pointed out that Putin’s words carry little weight, given the Kremlin’s own history of dealing with perceived adversaries. Speaking to the press, Professor Mark Kramer of Harvard University’s Kennedy School noted, “I think Putin’s words are intended to intimidate, rather than persuade. He’s hoping to create uncertainty and undermine Zelensky’s position, rather than engage in constructive dialogue.”
Moreover, observers have pointed out the similarities between Putin’s strategy and his recent statements regarding Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Like Zelensky, Netanyahu has been the subject of intense scrutiny from his Israeli counterpart, Naftali Bennett. Iran, in particular, has been criticized for its stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with many accusing the country of meddling in regional affairs.
In response to these criticisms, Putin seems to be doubling down on his rhetoric. However, experts argue that this approach is ultimately counterproductive, as it only serves to isolate Russia further from the international community. “This kind of posturing only serves to heighten tensions and create divisions,” said Dr. Maria Lipman, a specialist on Russian and Eurasian affairs at the German Council on Foreign Relations. “Putin would do well to engage in more constructive dialogue, rather than resorting to these kinds of divisive tactics.”
As tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to simmer, it remains to be seen whether Putin’s words will translate into action. However, with his reputation for saber-rattling and diplomatic brinksmanship, many observers remain skeptical that the embattled leader will be able to achieve his goals through more than hot air. For now, it seems Zelensky will remain in place, at least for the foreseeable future.
