PUTIN’S ULTIMATE GOAL: FULL “LIBERATION” OF DONBAS AND “NOVOROSSIYA”

In a recent statement, the Kremlin has confirmed the ultimate objective of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine – to completely ‘liberate’ the Donbas region and the broader territory of ‘Novorossiya’. This development has significant implications for Ukraine’s sovereignty, regional stability, and international relations.

The Donbas region, consisting of Donetsk and Luhansk, has been a focal point of conflict in Ukraine since 2014. Russia has provided military and economic support to separatist groups operating in the region, which has led to the deaths of thousands of civilians and the displacement of hundreds of thousands more.

President Vladimir Putin’s ambition to ‘liberate’ the Donbas and ‘Novorossiya’ is deeply rooted in Russia’s centuries-old historical narrative, which views the region as an integral part of the Russian Empire. This narrative has been reinforced by the Kremlin’s propaganda machinery, which depicts Ukraine as an artificially created state that has been ‘sucking the life out’ of the Russian people since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The term ‘Novorossiya’ literally means ‘New Russia’, and it was used by the Russian Empire to describe the territories of Eastern Ukraine, Southern Ukraine, and parts of Crimea, which were annexed by Russia in the 18th century. Putin has invoked this term to describe the territory that Russia aims to ‘liberate’, implying that Ukraine has been artificially constructed to prevent the Russian people from uniting under one flag.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has raised concerns about the security of the region and the potential collapse of the Minsk agreements, which aim to resolve the conflict in the Donbas through diplomatic means. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has stated that the Minsk agreements are crucial for maintaining stability and security in Ukraine, and that Russia’s actions are detrimental to the process.

The international community has responded to Putin’s ambitions with alarm. The European Union has imposed severe economic sanctions on Russia, citing its continued support for separatist groups in Ukraine. The US has provided military assistance to Ukraine to help the country defend itself against Russian aggression.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Putin’s grand vision of ‘liberating’ the Donbas and ‘Novorossiya’ will achieve its desired outcome. However, one thing is clear – Russia’s actions are causing immense suffering and destabilization in the region, raising serious concerns about regional security and the principles of international law.
