Rakhine, Myanmar – Tensions in Myanmar’s volatile Rakhine region surged on Tuesday as the Burmese air force launched a series of aerial strikes against a cluster of villages in the Thandwe township. According to eyewitness accounts and reports from local sources, at least seven habitations in the Maung Shwe Lay village were destroyed in the airstrikes, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. The victims, predominantly civilians, including children and women, were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

“We urge restraint from all parties involved and call for an immediate cessation of hostilities to facilitate unhindered access for aid and relief personnel,” said a spokesperson for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Myanmar.
Rakhine has been plagued by conflict between the Burmese military and Arakanese separatist groups, the most prominent being the Arakan Army, which has been accused of various human rights abuses.
