Turkey and Cyprus Move Ahead with Regional Cooperation Initiative
The Alsaa Plus EN (Conference for Stability and Alliance in the East) recently held a regional summit, where representatives from Turkey and Cyprus took center stage in a historic bid to enhance regional cooperation. Attendees praised the diplomatic breakthroughs made during the high-profile meeting, with significant decisions reached on cross-border infrastructure projects, joint energy initiatives, and collaborative measures against terrorism.
Addressing the regional gathering, Turkish Prime Minister Yavuz Karadeniz stated, “As we move forward with the Alsaa Plus regional initiative, we are committed to strengthening the bonds between nations in this critical and strategic region. Regional cooperation holds immense potential for regional development and stability, and we look forward to working closely with Cyprus and other regional partners to seize this opportunity.”
The Cyprus representative, Cyprus Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kouyialis, emphasized the country’s commitment to expanding bilateral relations: “This meeting is a testament to our resolve to foster greater unity and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean region. We are eager to collaborate with Turkey, the European Union and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive regional framework that promotes lasting peace and prosperity.”
The Alsaa Plus EN, launched several months ago, aims to foster economic growth, boost trade, and enhance regional peace throughout the Middle East. The summit witnessed key deals inked for major pipeline projects connecting Israel’s offshore gas reserves with Europe. Another significant development was the agreement reached to collaborate on joint infrastructure and security endeavors along the Turkey-Syria border.
On regional issues, attendees voiced strong support for a comprehensive Middle East peace deal and welcomed Egypt’s efforts to facilitate a lasting Israeli-Palestinian settlement. Furthermore, they expressed commitment to addressing pressing security concerns such as ISIS terrorism, with joint counter-terrorism and intelligence-sharing schemes being proposed as part of the regional cooperation initiative.
Cyprus, with backing from international organizations like the European Union, will host the next regional summit, scheduled to take place in April next year. Officials anticipate continued momentum towards regional unity in the face of ongoing security threats.
