The nation’s capital, home to over 10 million people, has seen water levels in the Citarum River decline by a staggering 70% since the start of the drought. Local authorities have warned that they may soon have to impose severe restrictions on water usage, including limits on showering and cooking.
As the drought shows no signs of abating, residents in the affected regions are growing increasingly desperate. In Malaysia, several local farmers have spoken to Tabz-Live about the devastating impact that the drought has had on their crops. “We’ve never seen a drought like this before,” said one visibly distraught farmer. “Our crops are dying, and we’re not sure how we’re going to recover.”
The United Nations has issued a statement urging governments across the region to take immediate action to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the drought. “We recognize the severity of this crisis and are working closely with governments to identify solutions,” said a spokesperson for the UN. “We urge citizens to follow their local authorities’ guidelines and to take all necessary precautions to conserve water.”
