Romania Denies Russian Airstrikes Amid Heightened Tensions Over Ukraine Crisis

Bucharest, Romania – The Romanian government emphatically denied reports of Russian airstrikes on Romanian territory on Tuesday, dismissing claims as “completely baseless” and “inflammatory.” The denial comes as tensions between NATO member Romania and Russia escalate over Moscow’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine.

According to unconfirmed reports, allegedly originating from Russian social media channels, multiple airstrikes were directed at Romanian military installations and air defense systems in the eastern part of the country. However, Romanian officials swiftly condemned the claims, stating they were “absolutely false and lack any evidence.”

“We have been informed of these allegations, and we must emphasize that they are completely baseless,” Romanian Defense Minister Vasile Dincu said in a statement. “Our defenses are on high alert, but we have not registered any attacks from the direction of Russia.”

Romania has been at the forefront of NATO efforts to counter Russian aggression in the region, with Bucharest participating in joint military exercises and hosting US troops stationed in Eastern Europe. The country’s location on the Danube River has raised concerns in Moscow, with some officials suggesting that Romania could serve as a critical entry point for Western military assets into Ukraine.

While the Russian government has denied any involvement in the alleged airstrikes, Moscow has been critical of Romania’s role in the Ukraine crisis, accusing Bucharest of harboring a “hostile attitude” towards Russia.

“This information is nothing more than a provocation,” Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in response to the allegations. “We expect Romania to refrain from any actions that could escalate tensions in the region.”

Romania’s denial of the airstrikes has been met with relief by NATO officials, who view the situation as a clear example of Russian disinformation tactics. “We are aware of the situation and are in close contact with our Romanian allies,” a NATO spokesperson said. “We are confident that Romania will continue to play a constructive role in addressing the challenges emanating from Russia’s actions.”

The incident highlights the escalating tensions between Russia and its NATO neighbors, with both sides engaging in a game of cat and mouse in the shadow of the Ukraine conflict. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: Bucharest will remain a crucial player in the international response to Russia’s actions in Eastern Europe.
