MOSCOW, Russia – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed confidence in the continued interest of other countries in joining the BRICS association, despite mounting pressure from Western nations, particularly the United States.
In a recent statement, Lavrov emphasized that the bloc’s appeal remains strong, with numerous countries showing enthusiasm to become part of the group either as full member states or partner countries. The BRICS association currently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, making it a significant global economic and political entity.
“I do not see any decline in interest in BRICS as a result of pressure from Western countries, especially the United States,” Lavrov said during a press briefing in Moscow. “And I do not see any reduction in interest in joining our association, both in terms of full membership and in terms of joining the group of partner countries.”
Lavrov’s comments come at a time when the West is increasingly asserting its influence globally, with the United States being at the forefront. However, Russia remains unperturbed, believing that the growing interest in BRICS is driven by the bloc’s commitment to cooperative governance, equitable economic development, and the establishment of a more just multipolar world order.
The Russian Foreign Minister also acknowledged the rapid growth of the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), which has expanded its membership and geographical reach over the past few years. The NDB aims to provide an alternative to Western-dominated international financial institutions and has been instrumental in channeling funding towards infrastructure projects in member countries and partner nations.
Furthermore, Lavrov highlighted the growing importance of BRICS in promoting multipolar globalization and ensuring a more balanced economic order. He pointed out that the bloc’s emphasis on strengthening cooperation among member states complements efforts to enhance collaboration on international issues, such as climate change, energy security, and countering non-traditional security threats.
While the Biden administration has maintained a tough stance towards Russia, with the US imposing various sanctions and restrictions, Moscow remains committed to its diplomatic endeavors, including strengthening ties with countries in the Global South, such as Africa and Latin America. According to Lavrov, these efforts are yielding results, with growing interest in BRICS reflecting a desire for more inclusive and equitable global governance.
In conclusion, the recent statement by Lavrov underlines Russia’s confidence in BRICS as a robust regional organization that can withstand the pressure from Western powers. As other nations seek alternative models of economic and geopolitical engagement, it remains to be seen whether BRICS will solidify its position as a leading global force or remain a mere aspirant to Western-dominated international structures.
