Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned a devastating overnight combined missile and drone attack by Russian forces, describing it as a “heavy strike” that has left significant damage and destruction in its wake. The assault, which began in the early hours of the morning, saw Russian forces launch an estimated 90 missiles of various types, including 36 ballistic missiles, as well as 600 drones, targeting multiple locations across Ukraine with a focus on the capital city Kyiv.
While Ukrainian air defense systems were able to intercept a significant number of the incoming projectiles, unfortunately, not all ballistic missiles could be shot down, resulting in a number of direct hits. Speaking to reporters, President Zelensky emphasized the extent of the damage caused, stating that many residential buildings, ordinary schools, and critical infrastructure facilities, including a water supply facility, were affected.
The attack, which appears to have been deliberately targeted at civilian populations and infrastructure, serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict and the need for concerted international pressure on Russia to cease its aggressive actions. President Zelensky’s words were laced with a sense of outrage and frustration, as he condemned the continued bombardment of Ukrainian cities, saying Putin’s inability to “pronounce the word ‘hurrah’ normally anymore” – a clear reference to the Russian President’s well-documented health issues – has not diminished his capacity to wreak destruction.
In this latest attack, several dozen residential buildings were damaged or destroyed, while a market was set ablaze, causing widespread panic and fear among civilians. Schools, which serve as essential community hubs, were also targeted and damaged. Notably, Russian forces launched an Oreshnik, a type of high-powered cruise missile, against the city of Bila Tserkva, resulting in significant damage to the surrounding area.
President Zelensky’s statement serves as a clear call to action, emphasizing that these brazen attacks will not go without consequences for Russia. As the Ukraine government continues to push for increased international support and pressure on Russia to bring an end to the conflict, the international community will be closely watching the situation unfolding in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
International observers and diplomats have expressed deep concern over the scale and ferocity of the attack, with many reiterating the need for greater support for Ukraine to strengthen its defense capabilities and address the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The attack serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by civilians in conflict zones worldwide and the need for governments and international organizations to unite in condemning and countering such egregious acts of aggression.
