Russia Launches Major Aerial Operation Against Ukraine with Kh-101 Cruise Missiles

In a significant escalation of its ongoing military campaign against Ukraine, Russia launched a major aerial operation from its Saratov Oblast, where four Tu-95 MS long-range strategic bombers departed with a payload of Kh-101 air-launched cruise missiles.

According to multiple sources, the Tu-95 MS bombers, which were reportedly escorted by Su-30 fighter jets, took off from their home base at Engels Airbase in the early hours of the morning to strike key Ukrainian military installations and infrastructure targets.

The Kh-101, a highly advanced air-launched cruise missile, is capable of delivering a 200 kg (440 lbs) warhead over a range of more than 300 km (186 miles). It has been employed by the Russian military with increasing frequency in recent weeks, resulting in significant material damage and infrastructure destruction.

The operation, which was reportedly carried out in the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire, involved extensive fighter escort and electronic warfare measures to minimize the risk of Ukrainian missile defenses.

“We can confirm that Russian Tu-95 MS bombers launched Kh-101 cruise missiles against targets in Ukraine,” a spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence confirmed. “While details on the specific targets remain classified, we have reason to believe that the attack was focused on key infrastructure and military installations.”

Ukrainian air defense forces were said to have engaged the incoming missiles, deploying S-300 and Buk missile systems to counter the Russian aerial onslaught.

Russia’s decision to unleash its strategic bomber force in this manner represents a significant departure from its previous tactics in the conflict, which have largely focused on using shorter-range tactical missiles and artillery systems. The escalation of Russian airstrikes, coupled with the introduction of more advanced munitions, suggests a heightened emphasis on achieving strategic objectives through the destruction of key infrastructure.

“It is clear that Russia is seeking to exploit Ukraine’s vulnerabilities through a sustained campaign of aerial bombardment and missile strikes,” added Ukraine’s Defense Minister. “However, we remain confident in our ability to defend our territory and protect our citizens, with assistance from our international partners.”

Russia’s military has yet to issue an official statement on the operation. The impact of the attack is still being assessed, but it is clear that this escalation will have far-reaching implications for the conflict and its international players.
