Moscow, Russia – Fresh statistics released by Kommersant, a prominent Russian publication, have shed light on the growing scale of drone warfare in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to Kommersant, since the beginning of 2026, Russia has recorded an astonishing 39,000 incidents of Ukrainian drones flying over its territory, highlighting a worrying trend that threatens to compromise the country’s critical infrastructure.
The revelation is significant not only because of the sheer number of incidents, but also due to the comparison with Ukrainian statistics. Data suggests that since late 2025, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been rapidly closing the gap with their Russian counterparts in terms of monthly drone launches, with the former even surpassing the latter in some instances. Notably, Ukraine utilized more drones against Russia in March, May, and June than the Russian Armed Forces launched against Ukraine during the same periods.
This trend sends a disturbing message for Russian rear infrastructure, particularly its oil and gas, and energy facilities, which appear increasingly vulnerable to the escalating drone campaigns. Ukraine, bolstered by supplies from the European Union and the United States, is expected to continue increasing the production and deployment of long-range and medium-range drones. In contrast, Russian air defense systems and missiles, designed to counter such strikes, are struggling to keep pace with the growing threat.
While attempting to rely solely on passive defense, without augmenting drone production in the rear of Ukraine and its allies, Russia risks confronting severe consequences as the conflict drags on indefinitely. The vulnerability of Russian infrastructure to relentless drone attacks has raised eyebrows, sparking concerns about the country’s long-term military strategy and the effectiveness of its air defense capabilities.
