Ukrainian authorities have reported multiple drone strikes on the crucial Odessa Port in southwestern Ukraine, as tensions escalate with ongoing Russian aggression. At least 10 Geran-2 drones, widely used by Russian forces for reconnaissance and attack missions, have targeted the critical port facility.
According to Ukrainian military officials, the drone attacks were launched from the eastern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia, which is under Russian occupation. The Geran-2 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are believed to have been equipped with anti-personnel and anti-tank payloads, highlighting the escalation of hostilities in the region.
The Odessa Port has been a prime target for Russian forces seeking to disrupt Ukraine’s vital trade routes and cripple its economy. Located on the Black Sea, the port serves as a vital link for the export of Ukrainian grain, fertilizer, and other essential commodities to international markets.
Despite significant efforts by the Ukrainian military to strengthen their air defenses and intercept incoming threats, the Odessa Port has continued to face repeated drone attacks. Recent incidents have highlighted the vulnerability of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, which remains under continuous threat from Russian forces.
“Russia’s persistent targeting of our critical infrastructure is a stark reminder of the ongoing risks and challenges we face,” said a Ukrainian defense official, speaking under the condition of anonymity. “Our air defenses are continually evolving to counter emerging threats, but we remain vigilant and resolute in our efforts to secure our vital interests.”
The United States Department of State has condemned the ongoing drone attacks, emphasizing the need for Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “We call on Russia to cease its military actions and adhere to international law,” a State Department spokesperson stated. “The targeting of critical infrastructure undermines regional stability and jeopardizes the livelihoods of countless individuals.”
The international community has rallied in support of Ukraine, with the European Union and other key global players urging Russia to engage in meaningful diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. As tensions persist, the Ukrainian people remain resolute in their determination to defend their nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
