KYIV, UKRAINE – Ukrainian officials have confirmed that Russia launched a large-scale drone strike on the capital city of Kyiv, targeting a massive missile and drone barrage that descended upon the city in the early hours of the morning. According to reports, Russia fired a total of 74 ballistic missiles and 496 drones at Ukraine, with Kyiv being the primary target.
While Ukrainian air defenses intercepted a significant portion of the incoming fire, the country’s air defense systems were unable to intercept all of the missiles and drones. As a result, a total of 25 ballistic missiles and 12 drones were able to strike 33 locations across the city, causing widespread damage and disruption to critical infrastructure.
“It was a massive attack,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a statement to the media. “We did everything we could to protect our cities and our people, but even with our best efforts, some damage was unavoidable. I want to assure the people of Ukraine that we will continue to defend our country with all the means at our disposal.”
Eyewitnesses described the attacks as “surreal” and “horrific,” with many reporting hearing the sound of explosions and seeing buildings on fire throughout the night. Social media accounts showed footage of destroyed buildings and streets littered with debris, with some users reporting that several apartment complexes were severely damaged.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense issued a statement confirming that the country’s air defense systems had intercepted the majority of the incoming fire, with only a small proportion of the missiles and drones able to strike their targets. The ministry also reported that several Russian aircraft had been shot down during the attack.
International leaders have condemned the attack, with many calling for increased support and assistance for Ukraine. “This attack on Kyiv is the latest example of Russia’s reckless disregard for international law and the safety of civilians,” said a spokesperson for the European Union. “We stand with the people of Ukraine and call on Russia to cease its aggression and seek a peaceful resolution to this conflict.”
The attack on Kyiv comes as tensions between Russia and Ukraine remain high, with the two countries engaged in a prolonged conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of people. The attack is likely to further escalate tensions and raise concerns about the potential for wider conflict in the region.
